A hori-hori is a type of Japanese gardening knife that is versatile and widely used for various tasks.

The tool typically has a sharp, double-edged blade with one side serrated and the other straight, making it suitable for cutting through soil, roots, and vegetation.

Basically, the  name was derived from the Japanese verb “hori,” which means “to dig.” Moreover, it is also known as a “soil knife” or “weeding knife.”

These knives often have measurements marked on the blade, allowing gardeners to gauge the depth of holes when planting. They are valuable tools for both amateur and professional gardeners, combining the functions of a trowel, knife, and saw in one tool.

Hori-Hori Uses

Here are some common applications for hori-hori knives:

  • Digging and Planting: The sharp, pointed blade of this knife makes it excellent for digging and planting. You can use it to break up soil, create planting holes, and transplant seedlings.
  • Weeding: The serrated edge on one side of the blade is effective for cutting through weeds and roots. The tool allows for precise weeding in tight spaces.
  • Cutting: The sharp blade is suitable for cutting through tough materials such as twine, small branches, or even opening bags of soil or fertilizer.
  • Harvesting: You can also use them to harvest vegetables, herbs, or flowers. The sharp blade is handy for cleanly cutting through stems.
  • Measuring: Some hori-hori knives even have measurements marked on the blade, which is useful for spacing plants or determining planting depths.
  • Bonsai Care: They are also useful in bonsai cultivation for tasks such as repotting, root pruning, and general maintenance.
  • Transplanting: The pointed tip and sharp edges make it easy to dig up and transplant small plants.
  • Slicing Through Tough Soil: The strong blade can cut through compacted soil or roots, making it easier to work in challenging soil conditions.
  • Loosening Soil: The broad, flat blade of the hori-hori is great for breaking up and turning soil in the garden.

My goal is to provide information and tools to gardeners and people who want to become gardeners. People who want to eat better quality food. Food that is grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, weedkillers such as Roundup, and GMOs.
